As mandated by the New York Department of Motor Transportations, window tinting regulations are as follows:

For Visible Light Transmission (VLT)

The amount of light that automotive windows must allow, your windshield must allow at least 70% VLT on the top six inches of any darkness shade. No tint under the top six inches is allowed. This applies to sedans, SUVs, and vans. Front side windows must also allow 70% VLT for sedans, SUVs, and vans, as well as back side windows for sedans, while SUVs and vans can have any darkness shade. ALL size vehicles can utilize any darkness for their rear windshield.

For Reflection

The windshield strip on any size vehicle must NOT be reflective in any way. The front side AND back side windows on any automobile should NOT exhibit any metallic appearance or mirroring effect. Finally, rear windshields have no restrictions regarding reflectivity.
